Are you a scientist with a screenplay, but no one to film it?

Welcome to Gene Screen Connections!

This is a place for aspiring GeneScreenBC filmmakers, scientists and experts of all stripes to connect online.

If you have a skill you’d like to share, or are seeking some equipment, expertise or experience, please let us know. We’ll post it here for others to connect with you directly.

I’m a Scientist with no film experience, but am willing to help out with the science concepts in other’s films. If you would like to connect, please email me: cathy [at] genegeek [dot] ca

Hi, my name is Greg Withers. I am a student at Columbia Academy enrolled in the Post Production and Sound Design program. I am offering Post Production assistance. Every movie can be drastically improved with some well placed footsteps, cloth movements, sound effects, and ambient background sound. Also, a creative musical element would establish flow and unity between the entire project.

I am looking to build a strong demo reel for my final project, and work from the Gene Screen Competition would really spice it up! I regularly do post work on all sorts of movies, everything from Background Sound, SFX, Foley, to Dialogue Editing, as well as writing creative background music. We have a computer lab full of Imac’s running ProTools 7.4LE, a separate foley room, and a fully equipped post studio runnning ProTools 8.

I am willing to work free of compensation in exchange for material for my demo.

Thanks for your time, please feel free to contact me: gregorywithers [at] gmail [dot] com

My name is Shaun Roemich. I have been a professional documentary filmmaker for 12 years and have worked for Canada’s national public broadcaster, travelled internationally to India, Germany, Jamaica and Brazil and have worked in the A/V and Video Production department of a teaching hospital in my former home town of Winnipeg, MB.

I specialize in character driven long form narrative reality programming. I was the principal videographer on a number of Genomics Centre videos produced at my former 9-5 in Winnipeg.

Since moving to Vancouver, I’ve been looking to increase my exposure and make professional connections that may lead to ongoing work in fields that interest me. The Gene Screen competition seems like a very natural fit.

I intend on attending the launch event but if you feel that you have a project that could benefit from my experience and willingness to work in a festival environment, please don’t hesitate to contact me at:
shaun (at) gearheadvisual (dot) com to discuss your needs and vision.

As well, please feel free to check out my (now outdated) website at http://www.gearheadvisual.com

I’m Jessica, a 3rd year Communication student at SFU. I have a strong interest in science, my passion right now lies in communicating scientific knowledge effectively to the general public.

I can animate simple stuff using Flash, I can also shoot video and do some simple editing, I’ve even done some stop-motion animation before.

I’m not the most skilled person you’re going to come across, but if you want to make an entry to this contest for the experience of making an entry, I might be able to help. My aim is to create something simple and effective, focusing more on creative, engaging, informative content, than on Hollywood special effects.

I am currently a high school recruiter for SFU’s Applied Sciences, so my work revolves around doing just that. Creating engaging, informative presentations for young people to learn more about science.

My name is Inder Nirwan and I’m a filmmaker looking to team up with a scientist in order to collaborate and develop a short film for the Gene Screen contest. Unfortunately I had to be on set last night so I wasn’t able to attend the launch party, but I am very interested in taking on this project. My experience includes extensive post production and compositing for TV; as well as, working in camera for big budget hollywood films like 2012, Night at the Museum 2 and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Currently I’m trying to bolster my experience as a film director by shooting short films and commercials. This opportunity would be a fantastic means for me to challenge my directorial brain and it could be a great way for you to communicate some of your ideas, theories and revelations to a broader audience.

I have a lot of confidence in my filmmaking abilities. I also have a reasonable pool of resources with which to create compelling films including a pool of eager young actors. If you’re interested at all, give me a shout at Indernirwan [at] Gmail [dot] com and we can chat about it.

    Hello!

My name is Chance Pemberton and I am a student enrolled in a post production audio/ sound design coarse here in Vancouver. I am very interested in joining a crew for the upcoming competition! As a former Biology major, as well as documentary “buff”, I find this competition particularly intriguing!

I am a musician by trade, and though I have been thoroughly trained in many aspects of audio post production in the past several months, I feel most confident in my ability to provide solid dialogue editing and musical score. That being said, I can also provide general sound design ( Foley, background editing, ADR/Looping, sound FX, etc.) and will bring a very positive and “can do” attitude to your project!

The school I attend is equipped with a full service post production audio facility, including a foley stage and tracking room for any ADR that may be required. ALL of which is at our fingertips!

Once again, I am a student, so I ask for little compensation! I am willing to work for demo material, credit, or just simply out of interest!

If you or anyone you know are interested, or have ANY questions regarding me or what I can bring to your project, please contact me at any time!

Thank you for your time and consideration!

    Chance Pemberton

I am an evolutionary biologist specializing in genome evolution at the University of Guelph in Ontario. I am very interested in science outreach and would be happy to discuss ideas with potential filmmakers. I think this is a great opportunity to show that entertaining films based on science can also be accurate.

    Hi all,

I am a producer/writer/director and plan to submit a film for this very cool event.

I am very interested in predictive genomics, which in my little mind:) I’m assuming is the science of identifying nature, nurture and statistical probability in the offspring DNA of a sequenced DNA? Hopefully this rings a bell with a scientific content advisor/collaborator who would be interested in developing a dramatic script with me.

Feel free to contact me at hshaw31@gmail.com

Thanks to the organizers for an excellent launch event!

Hello, my name is Chris Porteous. I am a recent graduate of the film production program at VFS. I am interested in heading or being part of the production side of things for someone who can creatively express the implications of this scientific work with a cohesive presentation concept in mind. I have included a link to my lighting and camera demo reel, and I know some other people who could help fill out a crew if the film concept is compelling. I also have experience with basic post production effects and editing. The idea of this contest really interests me, I would be happy to work in the camera crew if a team has already formed and requires more individuals.

    Hi there:

During the past year I have worked on an educational video involving a genomic technology called “array CGH” or array genomic hybridization. This test is capable of detecting very small duplications and/or deletions in your chromosomes (DNA/genetic material in all your cells). I have even written a script which has been fairly well developed. All I need now is someone with creative ability and film making knowledge to take this the next step.

    Any takers????

I’m a big fan of science and story. (I own the entire series of “The Universe”)

This project seems like a great combination of both. I currently create new media for a large provincial employer and have extensive experience in writing/storyboarding, shooting, compositing and distributing video and animations.

I can create custom animations/effects, write scripts/storyboard, create custom sound design, compositing/3D animations and professional editing. My secondary skills include shooting, lighting and directing.

I would be interested in pairing up with a scientist or project team to create an entry. If you are friendly, enthusiastic and have an idea for a great story I would love to chat with you.

Here is a link to my 2010 Demo Reel.
